The Aran Island Sweater, also known as the Irish Sweater, is named after its place of origin, the Aran Island. These islands are located off the West Coast of Ireland, at the mouth of Galway Bay. The torrential weather coupled with the isolation that the island experiences meant that the islanders couldn’t just go down to the local shop to buy clothing suitable for the harsh weather, the only solution was to make their own, and so the Aran Sweater was born.
